Former Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Bradford City and Barnsley soccer star John Hendrie presented the Jamie Payne-Ross Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sport at St Mary's RC School, Menston, on Wednesday.

Hendrie, now a Sky Sports commentator, has children at the school.

The award is presented annually in memory of former pupil Jamie Payne-Ross, who died in a tragic accident in December 1993.

The award is for outstanding achievement in sport for a Year 8 boy (12-13 years old) and was presented to the school by Jamie's mother Colleen and elder brother Adam.

Previous presenters of the award have included international athletics coach Wilf Paish, former swimming world record holder and Olympic gold medallist Adrian Moorhouse and former England soccer player, Trevor Brooking, a former Chairman of Sport England.

The recipient this year is Tom Taiwo. Tom is an outstanding all-round athlete who excels in football. He is a member of the Leeds United Under-13 Academy team.

David Geldart, Director of Physical Education at St Mary's, praised Tom for his achievements over the past two years.

He said: "It is always a difficult task to choose just one person for this award when so many youngsters are achieving so much.

" Tom is not only exceptionally good at sport he continually works so hard to improve his level of performance.

"Tom also demonstrates excellent leadership qualities and is always keen to help others.

"He is a very promising footballer who is doing very well with Leeds United. He is a most respected pupil and indeed a worthy recipient of this prestigious award."
