Orienteering in Lakes

Yewdale Fells, overlooking Coniston Water, was the scene of some good performances by local runners from Airienteers (the orienteering club for Leeds and Bradford).

Eighteen senior runners made the trip and several recorded top ten finishes. Ian Marshall of Ben Ryydding was seventh in the M40 Long course category, whilst Guy Patterson from Wakefield and Pat Wherity from Skipton were 6th and 8th respectively in the M40 Short course.

Another strong run by Peter Haines of Ilkley in the M45 Long course saw him finish 2nd whilst Brett Villiers of Barnoldswick was 5th in the M45 Short course. Meanwhile, Tony Carlyle of Harden had a fine run in a stong field in the M50 Long course.

For the women, Sarah Haines of Ilkley was 2nd in the W40 Long, Joyce Marshall of Ben Rhydding was 6th in the same category, and Shirley Wood of Addingham claimed 6th place in the W45 Long course. Susan Stevens had a fine run for 6th place in the W50 Long course.

Yewdale is typical lakeland rough pasture with lots of marsh and rock features together with a stretch of mature undulating woodland - very challenging orienteering in the hot weather of the weekend.

If you want to know more about orienteering, Airienteers runs a series of Wednesday evening informal events throughout the summer, all of them being held in local areas. Details can be found on the club's web-site at www.aire.org.

Wharfedale Harriers

Wharfedale Harriers have always enjoyed the great atmosphere of fell relay events and after recently finishing second out of only nine competing teams in the Sheepstones Relay, were determined to support the Badger Stone Relay to the full.

In total ten teams were entered, including a record five junior teams.

At the front of the field Ted Mason teamed up with Skipton's Stuart Hunn and Dan Walmsley to finish in third place for Skipdale behind Pudsey and Bramley and Leeds University, and should probably have won if Dan hadn't gone badly wrong on Leg 2.

Ted and Stuart ran identical times of 15.54 to just miss out on the fastest leg of the night, which went to Greg Hull in 15.47.

The Wharfedale Vets team of John Wootton (17.44, and who successfully completed the Bob Graham Round in the Lakes at the weekend), Jonathan Sinclair (21.26, who also went a long way around) and Bob Hamilton (18.19) finished in 7th place to retain their Vets title, closely followed by the Junior A team of Sam Watson (19.20), Josh Darling (20.04) and Caleb Wetherall (19.15) in 9th place.

The Vets B team of Pete Haines (20.07), Neil Bland (19.28) and Jeff Emmott (21.06) finished 17th. In the middle of the field of 39 teams, Wharfedale's Junior B Team had a great run to split the two Wharfedale Senior teams, Hector Haines (20.42), Harry Liuba (22.22) and Thomas Sessford (20.16) finishing in 21st place, just behind Liam Selman (22.20) , Richard Tarrant (22.04) and Sam Wadsworth (18.18) in 20th, and just ahead of David Hird (21.01), Mark Bennett (21.27) and Darren Hird (20.53) in 22nd. The youngest junior teams also had excellent runs, with Alex Sinclair (22.55), Marcus Bennett (22.34) and Nathan Procter (21.46) finishing 30th for the Junior C team, and Florence Haines (22.54), Jess Wootton (26.43) and Lottie Driver (25.59) finishing 35th for the Junior Girls.

National Juniors

A gloriously warm, but breezy, Moorways Stadium, Derby, was the scene for the second round of the Pennine Division of the National Junior (U-20) Athletics League.

Here 16-year-old Horsforth athlete Andrew Staniland of Leeds City AC, consolidated his position in a top three spot in the Athletics Weekly National Junior League Grand Prix individual competition. His day began well with a victory in the long jump with 6.84m and this was closely followed by another victory in the high jump, equalling his outdoor personal best with 1.90m.

Since the NJAL is an under-20 competition, he was then obliged to throw the 800g javelin and duly set a personal best with this weight of 47.46m for second place.

At the same meeting 15-year-old Fraser Davies mixed it well with older age group competitors.

He was second in the U-17 discus (1.75kg) with a personal best throw of 32.85m.

He was also third in the pole vault with 2.80m and third in the B string javelin (800g) with 28.17m. He produced a pleasing 6.04m when he guested in the long jump.

Finally, he ran a fine leg of the winning Leeds City 4 x 100m relay team.
