Dean Windass is back at City.

Windass has agreed a two-year contract to return to the club he left for Middlesbrough in March, 2001. He will be at pre-season training on Monday with his new team-mates before signing his deal on July 1.

The 34-year-old, who lives in Menston, has taken a pay cut to move and insists he is still as hungry as ever for success.

Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph & Argus, Windass said: "I'm not going back to Bradford for the comfort zone. If I'd wanted to do that, I could have gone somewhere else and earned a lot more money.

"I could have stayed at Sheffield United for that but this is not about money. All I want to do is play and I'm delighted that Nicky Law is going to give me that chance.

"I don't want to get in any bother but I love proving people wrong and I want to show Neil Warnock he made a mistake. I've had a lot of good vibes from Nicky about the club and he really sold it to me.

"Nicky has talked about getting the right mixture of experience and youth with the strength in depth you need. It's the same as what we had at Sheffield United last year.

"I can identify with what Nicky Law wants to do. I want to come here and be the best player.

"I want to come in and help the young kids through. You need experience down the spine of the team and we'll have that with the new goalkeeper, David Wetherall, Peter Atherton, myself and Ashley Ward if he stays."

Windass scored 20 in 88 games with City before Terry Venables snapped him up at Boro for £600,000. But he struggled to nail down a regular place at the Riverside and joined Sheffield United last November, scoring on his debut against the Bantams.

Now Windass is hungry to add to the fond memories he holds from his first spell.

He added: "They were great times we had in the Premier League and finishing second in the First Division. Nicky is trying to bring them back by getting in new faces and I'm ready to play my part."

City faced plenty of competition to win Windass back. His representative John Hendrie said: "There were some late moves for him from other clubs but I think his heart was always set on Bradford.

"Others may have offered substantially more but he made it clear to me that Bradford was the one that he wanted.

"I remember when I went to Barnsley from Middlesbrough at the age of 33. I had a fantastic two-and-a-half years there as we won promotion from the First Division and played in the Premiership.

"That was a great challenge for me and I'm sure Dean will treat returning to Bradford as the same. There is absolutely no way he is going there to wind down his career."
