Gran Alison Gowthorpe staged a sit-in on a bus after a driver ordered her to get off in a row over a child's buggy.

Now she has demanded an apology from bus company First for the way she was treated on the 646 service to Ravenscliffe.

She said she boarded the bus at Greengates outside Netto with 18-month-old grandson Brandon Lee still in the pushchair.

As her daughter, Laura, was paying, Alison got the tot out, sat down and stored the buggy in the holding area.

But, she claims, the driver became abusive and refused to move insisting that she should have collapsed it before getting on the bus. After other passengers intervened he eventually drove off like "a bat out of hell" claimed Mrs Gowthorpe, of Thackeray Road, Ravenscliffe.

"I had said to him: 'Just what is your problem?'," she said.

"We were sitting down with the baby on my knee but he kept telling us to get off.

"He said we should have collapsed the buggy before we got on and refused to drive on.

"I refused to get off because we were settled and sitting there. In the end other passengers started to tell him to get it moving. After that he drove like a bat out of hell.

"When we got off at our stop he was swearing at us and told us he would never stop for us again," she claimed.

"It was terrible behaviour. I use buses a lot and have never come across anything like it."

Khadim Hussain, operations director of First in Bradford, said they were trying to track down the driver at the centre of the allegations.

"We will then investigate the matter," he said.

"Following that, appropriate action will be taken and the customer will be contacted with our response.

"All our drivers are trained on customer safety and on customer care-related matters.

"Obviously we are disappointed with these allegations but cannot offer any explanation without speaking to the driver concerned."
