A 30-year-old former Keighley Cougars rugby league player killed himself on his birthday after a relationship with a woman ended.
Bradford Coroner's Court heard how Wayne McComb, of Brackenbank Avenue, Keighley, took the break-up "rather badly'' earlier this month.
He was found hanging from a piece of rope in his bedroom on June 18. Earlier that day, Mr McComb had been in a pub before he was taken home in a distressed state.
A post-mortem examination showed that the father-of-five died from asphyxia due to hanging.
The level of alcohol in his body was found to be more than three times the legal drink-drive limit.
Coroner Roger Whittaker said he was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Mr McComb intended to take his own life.
A scrum half, Mr McComb had professional trials for Bradford Bulls, played some games for Keighley Cougars and played for amateur teams Keighley Town, Worth Village, Keighley Albion and Silsden Park Rangers.
He had been playing rugby since he was a nine-year-old.
