Gary Walsh is hoping to resurrect his career with Paul Jewell's Wigan.

The former City keeper today flew out to Holland with the newly-promoted side, who need an experienced back-up to Australian John Filan.

Wigan will play two practice games in a six-day stay. And if Walsh, pictured right, can show his injury nightmare is in the past, Jewell is keen to take him on.

Jewell said: "Gary is training with us at the moment and we will take it from there. He has had a few injury problems but he is coming to Holland with us and if he proves his fitness we will be looking to take him on board.

"I know that he is a top-class keeper. I've worked with him at Bradford and if he is fit he will be good competition for John Filan."

Wigan-born Walsh, 35, was City player of the year in his first season at the club and voted the players' best player during the final term in the Premiership.

But injury problems, chiefly with his knee, restricted him to 145 appearances in six years.

Typically his final season with the Bantams was again blighted by injury.

He played the first three games before knee surgery ruled him out of action for five months and there were fears he would not come back.

After playing an hour of a reserve game at Aston Villa in February, Walsh had trouble with his back and it was a month before he featured again in three more second-string games.

But City fans will vouch for his shot-stopping abilities and Jewell believes his experience could be a key asset for Wigan's debut campaign in Division One.

Seventeen-year-old Ryan Yeomans is the only other goalkeeper currently on the books at the JJB - and he is sidelined long -term with a fractured wrist.

Huddersfield are waiting for a response from Gus Uhlenbeek after making him an offer. The Dutchman, also wanted by Walsall, has trained at the McAlpine for the last three days.
