More than 60 Yeadon residents attended an urgent meeting to discuss the future of their town hall.

Members of the Town Hall Users Group met on Monday to discuss the effect of the Boundary Commission's final recommendations on the future of Yeadon Town Hall.

The Commission's findings recommended that the town hall should become part of the new Otley/Yeadon Ward.

Yeadon residents are against these proposals and believe that they will lose the hall to Otley Town Council.

The meeting to discuss the implications for the hall was chaired by Margaret Atkinson, chairman of the Town Hall Users Group.

Most of those attending were representing organisations currently using the facilities.

The main concern is that if Otley Civic Centre closes due to its extreme repair costs then Otley Town Council would then take over the town hall.

A spokesman said: "Although it was agreed that whilst the town hall remains under the trusteeship of Leeds City Council it was safe, concerns were raised that access to the facilities could be reduced by the probable closure of Otley Civic Centre.

"When questions were asked as to how many people were aware of the proposed new boundaries only two people raised their hands.

"This surely confirms the feelings of the Town Hall Users Group that the proposals appeared to have been kept under wraps and not publicised according to the official guidelines.

"Many of those present agreed to write individual letters expressing their feelings and to encourage members of their societies to do likewise."

A further two meetings are due to be held at Yeadon Town Hall to discuss concerns and try and take action.

These will be held on Tuesday, August 12, and Tuesday, August 19, both at 7pm.

Any comments for or against the recommendations can be sent to The Secretary, Electoral Commission, Trevelyan House, 30, Great Peter Street, London SW1P before September 9.
