OPENING batsman Harvey Anderson steered Yeadon to a vital win over bottom club Gomersal on Saturday to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

Much will be depend on this Saturday's game at home to Farsley who are now only four points ahead of Yeadon with Idle sandwiched between them.

Yeadon have still to play Idle away in the league so the ball is very much in their own court at the moment.

Yeadon have struggled all season with their overseas player never appearing and a lot of changes from last season with players leaving for 'greener' pastures.

Howewver, new young skipoper Grant Soames has instilled a great team spirit and a sense of battling into his side and they have responded to occasionally lighten their gloom with valuable wins.

The Yeadon faithful will be looking for a couple more victories in the coming weeks as the side bids to retain its Division One status.

On Saturday Gomersal batted first and a superb 71 from Steve Pollard, who shared a valuable third wicket stand of 61 with former Yorkshire player Chris Schofield, provided the backbone of the innings.

An unbeaten 36 from number seven C Field took Gomersal to a more than useful 225 all out.

John Roper bowled a prolonged spell for Yeadon taking 5-71 off 18 overs but his colleagues found it hard going with Chris Henry bearing the brunt of the attack finishing with 2-66 off 12 overs.

There was no luck either for skipper Soames with 0-44 off 13 overs.

Although young opener James Todd lost his wicket for five runs with 29 on the board Yeadon were not deterred.

Anderson produced an excellent innings of 91 which only ended when Steve Pollard took an excellent one handed catch.

Second team skipper Andrew Pickering then became Yeadon's hero with an unbeaten 38 as his side clawed their way to a three wickets win with three overs to spare.

Valuable contributions were also made by Gulsharez Ahmed and Kevin Gilks each with 19 and by number nine James Postill who joined Pickering in a match winning unbroken stand of 39 for the eighth wicket. Postill finished with an unbeaten 26.

Yeadon seconds notched another win as they bid for promotion from Division Two.

That promotion cannot come quickly enough for players who want to play some decent cricket.

Saturday's opponents Manningham Mills were shot out for 55 with Nick Darfield taking 5-2.

Darren Machell then led Yeadon to a six wickets win after Tony Gilks and Alexis McInnes had fallen victim to a very young bowler Mills threw on in desperation. He was on a hat-trick but Ryan Duckett managed to avoid the ignominy.
