Family tragedy inspired Derek Stothard to complete a marathon cycle ride in aid of a children's cancer charity.

Derek, 45, a motorcycle sales executive, has just completed an almost 1,000 mile bike ride from Land's End to John o' Groats.

He drew his inspiration from the three people closest to him -- his late father Ron, a keen cyclist who died about two years ago of cancer; 67-year-old mum Margaret who has beaten breast cancer; and wife Sue, 42, who has faced a series of miscarriages and is now resigned to not having children.

"I wanted to do something to remember my dad by, for my mum who is in remission from breast cancer and my wife Sue," said Derek.

"We chose a children's charity because it meant a lot to us -- especially after my wife's miscarriages.

"And my dad was a keen cyclist and if he is looking down on me now, he will be so proud -- it will give him the biggest kick of all."

Derek hopes to raise £10,000 for Moonbeams, a children's cancer charity which finances trips and outings.

Derek, who works for Colin Appleyard motorcycles, in Keighley, completed the mammoth journey in 14 days. He was supported by friend Steve Green, in a Colin Appleyard sponsored back-up van, and by companies like Robin Nolan Cycles, of Keighley, who sponsored the bike and individuals.

"I'm extremely grateful for all the generous support," said Derek.
