A surprise 100th birthday celebration was held on the shopfloor at Morrisons for a regular customer.

Elizabeth Hawksworth, of Cross Roads, will be 100 on Monday and staff at the Worth Way superstore -- where she has been shopping since 1967 -- wanted to make it a special occasion.

Morrisons supervisor Margaret Brown said: "Mrs Hawksworth is a well known and valued customer.

"She has never once complained about work going on for the remodelling of the store and she is the happiest soul you could ever wish to meet.

"We have all got to know her very well over the years and she still comes in every Wednesday to do her shopping."

Morrisons store manager Debbie Rawson presented Mrs Hawksworth with a cake, a hamper, some flowers and a card from Ken Morrison.

Mrs Hawksworth said the event had been a lovely surprise and added: "I used to go to Mr and Mrs Morrison's shop in Bradford before they even opened in Bradford market.

"I have been shopping here all those years and still come back."

Her daughter Marlene said: "We are taking her to Harrogate to stay in a hotel for the weekend.

"She has five days worth of things planned to celebrate so we'll all be kept very busy.

"She will be celebrating at the luncheon club, at St James's Parish Church, in Cross Roads, and at the Oaks Centre.

"We are also going out with relatives from Leeds for a champagne celebration"

Mrs Hawksworth was one of a family of 15, born in Leeds. She went to school in the Armley district, leaving at 13 to work in a Farsley mill.

It was here she met her husband Alwyn and they married in 1928. After 30 years, Mrs Hawksworth left the mill and worked as a housekeeper in Baildon until she was 72.

When she was younger, she played hockey for the mill team, was a keen dancer and loved gardening.
