THE bells and organ of St Alkelda's Parish Church, in giggleswick, need £80,000 to keep them ringing and playing into the future.

Major restoration work is needed in the tower and organ loft of the historic church. The eight bells need to be rehung in a new frame and the organ requires a substantial overhaul.

An appeal has been started, although it will not be officially launched until September.

In the meantime a major fundraiser is being planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

A flower festival will take place in the church from August 23 to 25 with a special preview evening including music and wine on Friday August 22.

Tickets are available by ringing 01729 822893 or 825140.

Other fundraising events planned include a Parish Lunch to launch the appeal on Sunday September 28.

It will follow the church's harvest festival service which will be led by the former Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev Ian Harland. Residents of Giggleswick and neighbouring parishes are invited, whether or not they are regular attenders at church.

It is hoped to reach the appeal target by the end of 2004 and other events include wine and cheese evenings, quiz nights, a parish fun day and an outdoor play.

Meanwhile the bells at Settle's Holy Ascension Parish Church also need attention.

The church is currently raising money for maintenance work and has a target of £20,000.
