Drunken yobs could soon be cleared off the streets of Keighley as a booze blitz on troublemakers reaches the town.

Bradford Council is set to consult residents about plans to designate certain streets as no-go areas where police can stop drunken nuisances, order them to hand over drinks and then send them out of the area.

Those refusing to go could be arrested and fined £500.

A pilot scheme in Bradford city centre is likely to be extended and another has already been launched in Bingley.

Councillors are also expected to approve plans for a no-go project in Shipley.

Earlier this year the authority became one of the first in the country to adopt the powers under the 2001 Criminal Justice and Police Act.

But before it can designate streets, the Council must be satisfied there is an existing problem which will continue without it doing so.

The land in Shipley which will become a no-go nuisance area is bounded by and includes Park Street, Saltaire Road (from Park Street) into Commercial Street, part of Briggate and the Shipley station area.

The Arndale shopping area, Charles Street, Alexandra Road, Manor Lane and Wainman Street are also included.

But today Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton, who originally called for the schemes, stressed police officers would not be acting as "big brothers".

She said: "It isn't about preventing people from enjoying drinks and the orders do not cover public houses. But it is to stop people who behave in an antisocial way and become a nuisance.

"I look forward to seeing it being rolled out to other communities and feel it has certainly made a difference in the city centre.

"This type of behaviour is very off-putting for shoppers, residents and visitors. We have to keep the district attractive and safe."

The Shipley scheme will be considered by the regulatory and appeals committee on September 10 and the Keighley scheme will go to councillors on November 5 after consultation.

A final decision has not yet been taken on which Keighley streets will be designated.

Committee chairman Councillor Andrew Smith (Con, Queensbury) said he would like to see the schemes also extended to villages including Wibsey and Queensbury.

"There can sometimes be problems when people move on from one pub to another."
