Great grandma Dorothy Wiseman has clocked up thousands of miles during her campaign get a bus service continued.

The buses between Idle and Otley were put on a three-month trial run after Bradford bus company First withdrew a previous service because it was uneconomical.

The trial was agreed after Mrs Wiseman, 70, of Runneymead Court, Idle, collected a 700-name petition asking for buses to run between the two points.

Then Mrs Wiseman stepped up her campaign by travelling backwards and forwards on all the six services on Fridays, counting passengers, distributing time tables and urging them to carry on using it.

Mrs Wiseman said: "I think I was everything but the bus driver and went on every service.

"At first it was bad weather and not all that many people wanted to go to Otley for the day. But as the weather improved there were more passengers. On one day I counted 120 passengers on the bus, both ways."

Now the company has decided to extend the trial for a further three months before reaching a decision on the service.

Mrs Wiseman said: "A lot of people with pushchairs or elderly people prefer to go to Otley for shopping because Bradford is so hilly.

"I like to sit by the river. There's the bowling green and Friday market day."

Liberal Democrat ward councillor Ann Ozolins said the extra trial was a result of pressure and Mrs Wiseman's campaign. But she warned that if people did not use the service it would be axed.

The company's operations director, Khadim Hussain, also gave the "use it or lose it" message to residents.

He said they listened to the community but use of the first trial was disappointing and they needed more passengers to make the service permanent.
