Ben Muirhead turned City's opening game on its head and then revealed his personal heartache for close pal Jimmy Davis.

Muirhead (pictured) came off the bench to inspire Saturday's two-goal fightback against Norwich, scoring the first before Michael Branch netted a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

But afterwards Muirhead's thoughts turned to Davis, who died in an accident on the way to Watford's game with Coventry.

Davis had joined the Hornets on loan from Manchester United, where he spent six years playing in the same age-group sides as the City right winger.

Muirhead, who was told the news after the game, had spoken to his former team-mate only a few days ago.

He said: "It puts everything into perspective. To hear something like that is devastating and makes you realise that life is too short."

Muirhead's goal, which cannoned in via keeper Robert Green's back after hitting the post, was his first since quitting Old Trafford in March.

He added: "I've been getting stick from the lads about some of the chances I've had pre-season. But as I keep saying, I was saving it for this one.

"As soon as it hit the post I thought 'here we go again'. We'd hit the post twice already and Deano (Windass) had a shot smack someone on the line.

"But then I heard the crowd cheering and realised it must have gone in. I was told to go out there and change the game and when the goal went in I knew we'd get a result. One thing we said before the game was not to give up and it paid off."

Nicky Law was delighted that City refused to throw in the towel after Andy Gray had missed a penalty and Paul Evans hit a free-kick against the woodwork.

"At 2-0 heads could have dropped but they didn't," said the Bantams boss. "It was the Norwich players laid on the floor at the end, not ours."
