Two mums who died of cancer will be honoured during a charity cricket match on Sunday.

A Pudsey St Lawrence XI and a Bradford League invitation XI will battle it out for the Angela Brown/Rita Laycock Memorial Trophy.

The event was set up following the deaths of the two women from lung cancer within five months of each other.

Their families decided they wanted to help cancer research and in 2001 the first charity match was held. That raised about £3,250 and last year's event bumped the total up to almost £6,000.

This year they are hoping to boost it even more, with all proceeds going towards the Jane Tomlinson fund.

Rita's son Richard Hutchison, a member of Pudsey St Lawrence, will captain the Pudsey team.

And Angela's son Steven, a fellow Pudsey member, will captain the invitation team.

Richard said his mum was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2000.

She was treated in hospital in Leeds and ended up in the same ward as Angela.

The women knew each other because Richard's brother Paul and Angela's son Stephen had been friends from school.

Paul, a former Yorkshire County Cricket Club bowler who now plays for Sussex, cannot attend the charity match because of his county commitments.

Rita, who was 49, died on New Year's Day, 2001, and Angela succumbed to the disease five months later at the age of 46.

"It brought us all together," Richard said.

"We decided we should do something to honour the pair of them because they were fantastic people."

The first charity match was against Farsley and raised cash for the cancer ward at Leeds General Infirmary where the women were treated.

Stephen said his mum's death had been a shock because she was only diagnosed in December and died the following May.

But as well as the matches, he has also done the Leeds half marathon for charity in honour of his mum. And a friend completed the London marathon for the cause.

This year's cricket match will feature county stars including Yorkshire's Gavin Hamilton and Essex's James Middlebrook.

There will also be a barbecue, bouncing castle, raffle and auction with cricket goodies up for grab at the match at Pudsey St Lawrence's ground in Tofts Road.

Entry costs £1, which includes a lucky programme.
