An animal sanctuary faces an uncertain future after its car was stolen.

The vehicle, belonging to Buckwood Animal Sanctuary, of Buck Mill Lane, Thackley, was used to rescue animals in danger.

It was taken from Apperley Bridge on Saturday at 3.30pm.

Alan Littlewood, of Thackley, has run the sanctuary for the last 18 years and is registered disabled.

Mr Littlewood, pictured with one of the sanctuary's Afghans, said: "The car is the lifeline of the sanctuary and we won't be able to manage without it.

"So unless the car is recovered the future of the sanctuary is uncertain.

"Recovering the insurance for the car could take months and we can't afford to wait that long.

"The car is registered as disabled and the thieves would have noticed this. I can't believe people can be so cruel."

De-Andre Littlewood, known as Dandi, 36, who helps her father run the sanctuary, said: "We don't only use the car to rescue animals - we also use it on a daily basis to collect supplies and food for the animals."

The sanctuary takes in cruelty and abuse cases and regularly receives referrals from the police.

It currently cares for 25 dogs, eight cats, and two horses but will not be able to take in any more animals due to the lack of transport.

Miss Littlewood said: "I wish people would think more about the consequences of their actions - lots of animals will suffer as a result of this."

The sanctuary is appealing for people to come to its help and would welcome any donations or offers of transport.

The plain silver Subaru Legacy Estate, whose registration is J95 MLU, was stolen from The Moorings in Apperley Bridge.

The four-wheel drive vehicle was reported as stolen minutes after the incident took place.

The sanctuary is appealing for any witnesses to come forward with information. If you can help, call (01274) 618868.
