Bradford firms swept the board at a ceremony marking the best of Asian businesses in the Yorkshire region.

Maharaja Textiles, based in Cemetery Road, scooped the business of the year title for the third successive year at the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN) awards in Leeds.

And the company was just one of six celebrating on another great night for Bradford's Asian business community.

Manmohan Singh, director of Maharaja Textiles alongside his brother Jasvinder, said the nine-year-old firm, which now has an £11 million annual turnover, was delighted to scoop the honour.

The business, which recently opened a 50,000 sq ft base in Cemetery Road and employs 37 staff, imports textiles from all over the world and distributes throughout Europe and Canada.

"Both myself and my brother are very proud to win this award for the third year running," said Mr Singh.

"We try to give back to Bradford whatever we can and get involved in a lot of charity and community work. We are still growing and the future holds a lot of new investment and diversification into a lot of new avenues."

The award was handed to the company at a ceremony at the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds.

Clothing firm Bombay Stores, based in Shearbridge Road, Bradford, won the retailer of the year award.

The food and drink award went to Kashmir Crown Bakeries, in Worthington Street, Bradford, which manufactures savouries and snacks.

The runner-up prize was awarded to the Shipley-based Aagrah Group of Restaurants.

Gane Data Scan, based in Campus Road, Bradford, won the award for information technology, and PEC Building Services picked up the runner-up award in the manufacturer of the year category.

The ABDN was formed seven years ago to promote the cause of its 500 members across Yorkshire.
