The weekly car-boot sale at the Keighley Road auction mart just outside Bingley is very popular. No-one could dispute that. Every Sunday the sellers turn up in large numbers before dawn to set up their stalls and the customers start arriving shortly afterwards in droves.

But while the sale attracts a lot of interests and provides a useful service by enabling people to recycle their unwanted items, not everything about it is good news.

The traffic it generates causes sizeable problems, partly because it adds to the delays and congestion on what is already a very busy road (a problem which will be eased considerably when the Bingley relief road opens) but also because inconsiderate parking intrudes on local residents' peace of mind and privacy.

It is hardly surprising that members of the Bailey Hills Action Group are up in arms about the situation. They accept that they can't stop the sale itself taking place despite Sunday having become a day some of them now dread.

What they do want, though, is that measures be taken to stop visitors to the sale parking their cars in their streets, causing a noise nuisance and, more importantly, creating a potential hazard if the emergency services needed to get through.

Their request is not unreasonable. Fortunately Shipley Area Committee agrees with them and has suggested that possibly parking in the affected streets could be for residents only.

The Council should endorse that idea and act on it promptly to make the dark winter Sunday mornings more tolerable for the people who live close to the sale venue.
