Angry residents in Bingley are calling for new parking restrictions to help ease the chaos caused by the town's car boot sale.

Members of Bailey Hills Action Group object to the Sunday sale at the Keighley Road auction mart site because of the congestion it causes in residential streets.

The Telegraph & Argus reported in summer last year how a 69-signature petition was submitted to Bradford Council.

Now the Shipley Area Committee has recommended that parking should be looked at and one possibility could be to restrict it to residents only.

Protester Fred Crowther said people flocking to the sale blocked roads, including Bailey Hills Road, Lock View and Cemetery Road, with their parked cars.

"There's no way an ambulance or fire engine would get through in an emergency and something has got to be done before there's a serious issue," he said.

"I don't object to car boot sales but this is a quiet residential area and it's got to the point where we dread Sunday mornings."

He said residents were regularly woken at about 6.30am by car doors banging, the smell of frying onions and car alarms.

"A sale like this is more suited to the centre of Bradford on a Sunday and although we can't stop the sale itself we hope life for people living around here can be made more pleasant," said Mr Crowther.

Parked cars also cause traffic jams along Keighley Road in either direction, as far as Crossflatts and Beckfoot Bridge.

Councillor David Heseltine (Con, Bingley), who is chairman of the area committee, said because the sale was on private land the committee was not legally able to stop it.

"It's been running for more than ten years and we are working closely with residents to try to ameliorate the problems related to it," he said.

"What we can do is look at parking and traffic issues and see how improvements can be made in these areas."
