Bradford Salem, surprise packets in Yorkshire Division Two so far this season, face a moment of truth tomorrow.

The second-placed Heaton side meet unbeaten leaders Beverley at Shay Lane.

Having gone up last season as runners-up, a season of consolidation would have been all right for Salem.

But, as their match secretary Neil Klenk says: "We have exceeded expectations. We were not too worried about our pack, but we have had to recruit elsewhere to be competitive at this level, and our new half-back pairing (Matt Booth and Dave Howcroft) have made a big difference."

The most relevant form indicator tomorrow is Sheffield Tigers, who say that Salem gave them a tougher match than Beverley.

Second-row Damien Cope was Salem's man of the match last week at West Leeds, but the versatile former Wibsey player has been given a wing berth this time as Russell Donoghue is unavailable.

Centre Lee Bowyer is out with a broken scaphoid, but Dave Luxton and Ben Scarbrough return to the bench after a wedding. Utility back Richard Langhorne is promoted from the second team to sit alongside them.

North Division One leaders the Bees are without No 8 Chris Hala'uifa for their home match against bottom club Aspatria. They are hopeful he will only get a further two-matches (November 15, 22) for his dismissal against the Vale of Lune on October 4. Barry Clark, normally a lock, gets the nod for the vacant back-row position, Richard Hughes partnering Rob Woodhead in the second row. Centre Stuart Dixon (thumb) is benched.

Cleckheaton, up to second after handing Chester their first league defeat of the season, have full back Alex Green and fly half Mark Sales back for the trip to Birkenhead Park.

However, they are still trying to find their bext back-row combination. Chris Willett, Lance Hamilton and No 8 Richard Maunder are the preferred trio tomorrow, Jamie Kaye and Oliver Akroyd warming the bench.

Andy Hodgson and David Pears return after injury for Wharfedale at home to Moseley in National League Two, ut Tony Jackson is still sidelined. Pedram Salahshouri and Gareth Johnston are both unavailable, which makes selection for the wing positions rather simpler - although Andy Lovatt, with his six-try spree for the Foresters last Saturday, would have staked a strong claim anyway.

Ben Pattinson makes his debut at flanker, while Paul Evans, on the bench, will be consoled by playing for the Barbarians against the Combined Services next week.

Improving Keighley, at Dinnington in Yorkshire Division One, start with the team that finished the 41-6 demolition of Selby last week.

Paul Sinfield, who came on at half-time six days ago, begins in the front row, Tom McArthur going onto the bench, and Peter Southgate is rewarded for his fine second-half display with a berth in the second row.
