WEST Yorkshire Premier League leaders Carlton Athletic visited Cross Hills sporting a replica Leeds United kit, but unlike their professional neighbours, they went away with a 4-2 victory given to them by their generous opponents.

Cross Hills tore into their visitors from the start and for the first 20 minutes gave them a torrid time. As in previous games, they created and missed several chances.

Carlton eventually took advantage of this and went ahead when a speculative shot came back off the bar and rebounded off the goalkeeper for their opener.

The second followed shortly afterwards when a loose pass went astray and Carlton finished clinically, while a third goal came when the ball was dropped at the feet of the opposing striker, who gleefully slammed the ball home.

The home side came out strongly in the second-half and dominated the game. They pulled two goals back, the first an own goal after sustained pressure and the second from Rob Wilkinson.

Between them, however, Carlton scored a superb fourth goal on the counter attack, leaving the home side to lament too many missed chances and a penchant for giving the ball away in a game they should have won easily.

Settle United will have home advantage in their replay against Pannal after the sides drew 3-3 at Harrogate at the first attempt.

The visitors allowed themselves to be intimidated by Pannal's long-ball style in the first-half and only a backs-to-the-wall defensive effort and some terrific goal-keeping from James Metcalfe managed to restrict the half-time deficit to 2-0.

The second-half, however, brought a new-look Settle as the side retained possession, kept the ball on the ground and made the home team do the chasing.

Despite missing a handful of chances, Settle eventually cut the deficit when David Worthington produced a powerful run and an equally strong finish and when Ian Wildman scored the second, Settle were well in control.

They were unable to convert any of the chances they created before the end of normal time, however, and in extra time the home side went ahead again as the Settle defence started to feel the pace.

Settle still had one shot left in their locker, however, and they claimed a home replay tomorrow (1.30) when Wildman found the target thanks to a rebound after a last-gasp corner.

There were no such problems for last season's finalists Silsden, the holders, and Barnoldswick Town, who both progressed in fairly emphatic style.

Silsden won their local derby against Keighley Shamrocks 3-0, while Town went one better with a 4-0 defeat of Britannia Sports.

Keighley Lifts were 1-0 winners at Heckmondwike, but Steeton went down 2-1 at home to Storthes Hall and Thorne Colliery defeated Bronte Wanderers 4-1.

Carleton Athletic from the Craven League also claimed their place in the next round of the Trophy competition when they beat Old Headingley 5-2 at Ramper Park after slipping behind and looking as though they were facing a very difficult test.

But after the early onslaught, Carleton's midfield began to stem the tide of free-flowing football, with midfield pair Windle and Ross leading the response, the former heading home Bradley's cross to level the scores at half-time.

Carleton now raised the pace of their game to put the visitors under pressure and they took the lead when Ross won the ball in midfield to break through and then had the pace and composure after a 30-yard burst to finish the job in fine style.

The Leeds team continued to play neat and tidy football, but once again they were caught on the break when Stephen Morphet scored from close range.

Headingley responded with another swift attack, but goalkeeper Preston was alert to the threat. His intervention, however, was deemed premature by the referee and he was sent off for handling outside his area.

Robert Bradley took over in goal and Carleton cleared the resulting free-kick before making the game safe. Ian Bernard was the scorer after showing a nice turn of foot and good control to set up the chance.

Headingley eventually collected a second goal for their efforts, but Carleton had the last word. Good work by Ross, Cox and Bernard set up the chance and Morphet was in place to finish it off and close a memorable Carleton performance on a high note.

Skipton Bulldogs joined them in the third round draw with a 5-2 home win over Knaresborough Town Reserves, but Cross Hills Reserves will replay against Aberford Albion after a 3-3 draw at the first attempt.

Silsden Reserves were beaten 4-2 at Bramley Juniors and Steeton Reserves went down 3-2 at Littletown Reserves.
