Pupils at Sutton Church of England School are sending special Christmas gifts to children less fortunate than themselves.

They have prepared 60 boxes filled with treats that include toys, woolly hats and scarves, books, scented soaps and other items that will be sent to developing countries.

The school has worked together with Sutton Baptist Playgroup, St Mark's Toddler Group, at Utley, and staff on the maternity unit at Airedale Hospital.

The scheme is part of Operation Christmas Child for the Samaritans. The gifts will be distributed to more than 100 countries worldwide.

Pupils first began their hard work back in October, when they received information leaflets in class. Parents have also been involved, donating £2 per child towards the transportation costs.

School administrator Toni Birch said: "The children here have loved doing this, just filling boxes with bits and bobs.

"Most importantly, they think it's nice to give something back."
