It sounds like the plot of an old feel-good Hollywood musical... a scheme to get Bradford singing and dancing in the streets.

Well, not quite, but while we might not see friendly beat bobbies pirouetting around Centenary Square while half the population bounces around in puddles, Bradford: The People's Musical should certainly put a spring in the step of the city.

There will be a series of events culminating in a fanfare finale in the summer of 2005, all of which will be a commemoration of Bradford's rich and diverse heritage and a celebration of its present.

All the district's diverse groups are being asked to come together to participate in and support the events which are set to make up the biggest single community-led arts project for years.

It is to be hoped that everyone rallies to the call. Bradford has a strong tradition of entertainment and the arts, and this type of event will show that the city has truly bounced back from its failed Capital of Culture bid.

It is an opportunity to prove that Bradford's commitment to culture didn't begin and end with the brochure drawn up to enter the competition. A project like this could have the eyes of the world turned to Bradford and with the focus on community involvement it will take art to the people and celebrate all that is good and hopeful about the city at the same time.

The organisers say there is a place for everyone in this show and with such a fantastic cast to draw on for the People's Musical, this is one show that can't fail to have a happy ending.
