A boss whose clothes shop was ram-raided two nights in a row says police broke a promise to stay vigilant even after they warned him the gang may strike again.

Robert Smith, a director of Henry Smith's in Shipley, feels let down after a copycat version of the previous night's raid at the exact same time.

In the first raid, thieves caused £1,500 damage and stole about £3,000 of goods after they used a pick-up truck to smash their way into the shop.

Mr Smith said: "Police told us that, in a large proportion of cases, the culprits often repeated the attack before full repairs can be made. They did promise to stay vigilant that night but the villains struck again at the same time as the night before.

"Even after full repairs, I still feel vulnerable as the Briggate and Charles Street area seems to be a haven for anti-social and criminal activities, without any form of policing evident." He said police had now said they would take a look as they drive past: "But that's not enough. We want them to take a detour off the main road round our buildings."

And he is calling for anti-ram raid bollards on the pavements as a deterrent.

Shipley East Councillor Phil Thornton has asked West Yorkshire Chief Super-intendent Graham Sunderland to host a meeting and reassure traders around Briggate and suggested CCTV cameras on lampposts.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We sympathise and will contact the shop owner. However the shop owners are primarily responsible for protecting their own premises against ram raiders."

Chief Inspector Simon Atkin said: "On the second night, officers were aware of the crime which had occurred the previous evening and did pay attention to the premises but we could not maintain a constant presence due to other incidents.

"Officers again were in attendance within three minutes."
