The search has begun for the most mis-used bus stop in Bradford.

The Green, in Idle, has suffered more than most as shoppers park their cars directly in front of the stop, making it virtually impossible for disabled people to climb aboard.

It is thought to be one of the worst in Bradford and now a coalition of people representing disability organisations has formed to tackle the problem throughout the city.

Joe Grint, chair of Bradford District Mobility Planning Group, said: "To someone without mobility problems or vision or learning difficulties, negotiating parked cars while trying to board a bus may seem a little more than an inconvenience.

"But for disabled people, thoughtless and inconsiderate parking at bus stops can sometimes prevent them from travelling altogether or stop them getting off the bus at the stop they want.

"I would ask drivers how they would feel if they were prevented from going to work, doing their shopping or visiting friends by cars parked across their drive or blocking their car in the street."

The group has so far identified three particularly mis-used bus stops in Bradford - Lilycroft Road in Heaton, Morley Street, opposite the Resource Centre in Bradford city centre, and The Green.

"Once we have nominations for the most mis-used bus stop, we will see what we can do about it," said Mr Grint.

Mr Keith Bolton, of Bolton, heads a disability group in Bradford and across West Yorkshire which aims to protect disabled people.

Mr Bolton himself suffers from cerebral palsy and arthritis and is keen to ensure that the message is conveyed fully to careless motorists.

He said: "I would ask people to think before they park and show a little consideration for others."

Sergeant Keith Cluderay, of West Yorkshire police, said: "It's about showing a bit of respect for the law and for older people. We have identified these three areas as the main hot-spots in Bradford and will continue working together and checking the areas in our bid to combat the problem."
