Ilkley AFC 7 , Pateley Bridge 0

Hat-tricks for Hannaford and Barrow set the seal on an emphatic win for the Booth's sponsored Ilkley FC against a Pateley Bridge team who had defeated the home side in an earlier season cup game.

Ilkey were able to recall Quaife, Hannaford, Metcalfe and Potts, and the slippery wet conditions presented a challenge to both teams and a further deluge would have seen the game postponed.

Thankfully, the rain ceased and though the game ended in near darkness, Ilkley made a bright start by taking the lead after five minutes. Surging past Aldore,

Hannaford had his legs swept from beneath him in the penalty-area and picked himself up to place the ball low into the corner from the penalty-spot.

Whatever, hope Pateley Bridge had of frustrating the Ilkley team was undermined three minutes later when Knox and Mynett combined on the edge of the area to send Barrow clear and Ilkley's top scorer fired the ball past 'keeper Wilcox.

A tendency to slacken-off by some Ilkley players enabled Pateley to push forward from midfield in search of a goal that might get them back in the game.

Ilkley goalkeeper Bainbridge parried a sharp shot by Bush with Braithwaite completing the clearance, and then he held two crosses with confidence.

Yet every time Ilkley pressed forward, Pateley's defence looked vulnerable and the visitors' resolve was probably broken when Hannaford's diagonal free-kick was misjudged by the previously competent Wilcox who could only palm the ball into his own net.

An injury to Ilkley captain Knox after 35 minutes saw Houlston enter the fray, and for a few minutes Pateley forced two corners and had an indirect free-kick from 12 yards that Bainbridge tipped over the bar with an excellent reflex save.

At the other end, McTigue almost broke through on the left and saw his low shot saved, and Hannaford rounded 'keeper Wilcox only for Aldore to block the angled shot on the goalline.

The fourth Ilkley goal showed the gulf in quality between the two teams as a move started by Richardson at full-back, went across the pitch via Barrow, McTigue, Knox and Hannaford before Mynett touched the ball past Wilcox at the near post.

At times in the second-half, Ilkley players became complacent and the spurts of high quality play seen in the first-half were less frequent.

Nevertheless, Pateley failed to mount a serious attack in 45 minutes, with Bainbridge a virtual spectator, with central defenders Bloom and Potts showing resilience and concentration to maintain a clean sheet, and Quaife dominating midfield possession.

Ilkley's fifth came on the hour when Wilcox's clearance was charged down by Barrow allowing the Ilkley striker to push the ball into an unguarded net.

The hat-trick was completed in much better style ten minutes later as he collected the ball on the half-way line surged past the tiring Bullough and Aldore before drilling the ball low across Wilcox and inside the far-post.

At 6-0 the game was over as a contest and gave Ilkley the chance to bring on Stockdale and Metcalfe to improve their match fitness.

Stockdale made an immediate impact when he burst through and his low shot was blocked by Wilcox's legs.

A swift break almost set Houlston running clear, Hannaford had a low shot well saved by Wilcox, and was then upended by Aldore to gain a second penalty.

This time a chip into the left-side of the net after Wilcox had committed himself by diving to his right completed the scoring.

l On Saturday, Ilkley will face a sterner test when they face title contenders Otley Town at the West Holmes field, kick-off 2pm, players meet at the cricket club at 1pm.
