Pupils from Denholme Primary School have turned over a new leaf this week, by planting trees in the grounds.

A variety of native trees were planted on Saturday to celebrate the first day of National Tree week.

A spokesman said: "The school is keen to involve the whole community in this project, which will hopefully include digging a pond, sowing wild flowers, even growing organic vegetables.

"The trees are a great starting point because they are an investment in the future."

"It improves the general appearance of the school grounds also, but beyond that we want to develop it into a community wildlife garden."

The Friends of Denholme Primary School and a Tree Council grant helped get the project off the ground.

Council director general Pauline Buchanan Black added: "We are delighted that Denholme Primary School will be helping to celebrate National Tree Week.

"Trees are important for shade, beauty, to stimulate the imagination and as a really good way of learning about wildlife and the environment in general, linked to curriculum studies."

Denholme is one of 157 schools and 51 community groups to share grants totalling more than £68,000.
