Scores of gravestones have been unearthed in a Worth Valley graveyard.

Haworth Primary School gardening club discovered the graves during a sponsored graveyard clean-up last Saturday.

The gardening club, who have been praised for their work in brightening up the village, undertook the work to clean Haworth's churchyard after Rev Jenny Savage said it was a mess.

Gardener Steve Thorpe, who set up the club, said: "Everything went well considering what the weather was like.

"It poured it down all day but we still did it."

He said representatives from the church joined 17 children from the club and parents in the event, which raised money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Manorlands.

The gravestones had become hidden under piles of leaves and soil which had built up over many years.

"A lot of the graveyard was worse than we thought it was.

"A lot of the gravestones have not been seen for years and years and we took up several inches of soil," Steve added.

"It was really interesting to see all the dates, because some go back a hundred years.

"Everybody enjoyed it even though it poured it down and we are going to do it again.

"It is such a big task -- there are more gravestones than you realise.

"It looks totally different because before you could only see a few gravestones."

Steve hoped the final total for the two charities would be about £1,000.
