Schoolboy Luke To has been hailed a hero after his dad and baby brother were involved in a horror smash.

Luke, 14, went into action after a car collided with the To family's people carrier outside their home on Dradishaw Road, Silsden.

His dad, ambulance driver Ken To, 29, was securing five-week-old Benjamin into a seat when the incident happened. Two other children, Jessica, seven, and Oliver, nine, were already in the Volkswagen Sharan.

Ken was thrown forward hitting the doorframe and suffered a serious head wound which needed 40 stitches. His wife, Gillian, 34, daughter Eleanor 22-months, and sons, Josh, 11, and Luke, 14, were on the doorstep waiting to get into the car.

Mrs To said: "Ken was hurt and Ben was teetering in his seat out of the car. Everything was caked in blood and we couldn't tell who was more seriously hurt."

She added: "Automatically, without thinking, Luke put himself in danger to help his family.

"He's a little hero. He rushed to help his dad get Benjamin out. He checked his breathing and discovered he had suffered a cut to the chin. He moved Oliver and Jessica to safety, then brought a tea towel from the kitchen to help tend to his dad."

Two ambulances were called to the scene. They took Ken and Ben to Airedale Hospital. Oliver and Jessica were unhurt, but suffered shock. Mr To's injuries to his head and face were so severe, he had to be referred to a plastic surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The couple have complained to the Highways Agency and contacted Silsden Town Council for help in starting a campaign to introduce traffic calming measures to the roads.

In April the To's were met with a four-by-four in their front garden after a drunken driver crashed through their wooden fence.

l Two men appeared at Bingley Magistrates Court on Monday, in connection with the incident last Saturday, charged with aggravated vehicle taking, assault while resisting arrest and driving when disqualified and without insurance. One was remanded in custody, the other was released on bail.
