Leek Town 2, Guiseley 2

GUISELEY produced a great comeback after going two goals down to third placed Leek Town but were then disappointed not to take full points.

An outstanding display by the home 'keeper Steve Hodgson kept Guiseley from stealing the win in the latter stages. Some stunning reactions kept out efforts from Jeremy Illingworth and substitute Stewart Airdrie in the last throes.

In the early stages Simon Parke, back after an injury lay-off, headed wide as he sought to extend his goal record from four in five games since his return to the club.

Leek went ahead in the 18th minute when Mark Roberts met a free-kick with a good header and netted from 15 yards.

Guiseley's leading scorer David Henry and Scott Jackson were both denied by athletic saves from Hodgson before another set piece led to Leek going 2-0 up through Anthony Danylyk.

Seven minutes after the break Mark Stuart headed Simon Parke's cross into the path of Henry who netted with a right foot shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Hodgson then kept out Illingworth's fierce shot after Mark Stuart had found him with a good ball. Hodgson then produced a stunning save to prevent Airdrie making his mark from six yards with his first touch of the game after coming on as a substitute.

Henry had another effort saved in the 84th minute before Guiseley's pressure finally told. Illingworth got the final touch in a packed goalmouth heading the ball into the corner of the net to give Guiseley a share of the spoils.

Guiseley: John Lamb; Peter Atkinson, Gary Birchall, Nathan Hay, Keiron O'Brien; David Henry, Jeremy Illingworth, Richard Chattoe, Mark Stuart; Simon Parke, Scott Jackson. Subs David Cooke, Andrew Shuttleworth, Stewart Airdrie.

l On Saturday Guiseley travel to Matlock Town in the League Cup quarter-finals. On Tuesday they will entertain Belper Town in a re-arranged game which kicks-off at 7.45 pm.

The Reserves, bolstered by James Nettleton and Peter Sumner from the first team squad, took the lead against Leigh RMI. Scott Cater netted in the first-half but then Guiseley went behind and never looked like saving the game. They eventually lost 4-1.

l On Saturday the Reserves travel to Barrow for a Lancashire League game.

Guiseley manager Neil Parsley said that he was hoping to sign two new centre-backs this week.

In recent games his defence has been found lacking in height and has conceded a number of goals from set pieces. Out of favour James Nettleton played for the Reserves last Saturday and the side has not been dominant in the air at the back since the defection of Gary Shaw.
