Baildon kept themselves in the hunt for the second promotion place in Yorkshire Division Four with this derby victory.

The win not only completed the double for Baildon, who won 16-12 at Jenny Lane in October, but also lifted them to fourth above Stanley Rodillians, who were beaten 20-12 at home by unbeaten leaders Barnsley.

More good news was the 19-7 defeat for second-placed Hullensians at Wetherby, which means that only two points now separate the clubs placed second to fifth with Baildon right in the mix.

Their local rivalry with Otliensians was made all the more interesting in that three Baildon players were with the hosts last season - flanker Andrew Walton, prop Matthew Payne and player-coach Hugh Gumbs.

Fly half Gumbs said after a hard-fought encounter: "It was strange going into the away dressing room, but the three of us were made very welcome."

The former Bradford Northern and Bradford and Bingley player added: "It was nice to see Baildon get motivated and committed.

"We should have scored a couple more tries in the first half with the wind at our backs, but Otliensians persistently infringed.

"We had to settle for a couple of Dave Wilde penalties and his conversion of Chris Smithies' fantastic try.

"Against the wind it was always going to be difficult, but we could have scored another try if it wasn't for more persistent infringement. The referee did a good job in the cirumstances and made the right decisions at the right time. He wasn't overawed."

Otliensians skipper Adi Fawell was much less enthusiastic about referee Phil Padgett's performance, and said: "We had a good chance of winning the match in the second half, but the referee gave a lot of things against us.

"I am disappointed about the result, but when we went down to 14 men with the dismissal of hooker Andrew Rockett we had to reshuffle the side. And when we went down to 13 with the sin-binning of centre Dave Smith it was the final straw."

However, Baildon's victory at a breezy Chaffer's Field was down to tenacity and better discipline.

Referee Padgett had to talk to Baildon flanker Nick Murphy, and Payne (and Otliensians' Smith) after first-half flare-ups, but overall the visitors kept their tempers in check.

Rockett was dismissed - Padgett's first red card in ten years of whistling - for punching Baildon's replacement prop James Wood while he was on the floor, and Smith sin-binned for preventing James Dawson from taking a quick tap penalty.

Baildon had an early warning of lock Richard Smith's running power in the fourth minute, and never satisfactorily cleared their lines before Smith scored a few minutes later.

Full back Dave Wilde replied with a penalty and they took the lead in the 24th minute with centre Smithies' fine try between the posts after a deep incision on the right wing by Richard Moorhouse.

Wilde converted and added a penalty to make it 13-5 to the visitors at half-time, but two Ian Chaplin penalties (50th and 55th minutes) gave Otliensians every chance in the second half.

Smith was unlucky not to create a try or score himself with a barn-storming run downfield, but Baildon found a higher gear after Rockett's dismissal and Smith's yellow card. Wilde added a penalty in the 77th minute to stretch the lead to five points.
