Teenager Declan Corby marked his debut with a superb individual goal and he also set up the other as Thackley snapped out of their recent slumber with a fine 2-0 win over Arnold Town.

The young striker settled after a nervous start and caused the struggling Nottinghamshire outfit problems. Thackley, with skipper Craig Sugden and James Riley back in the side, put in a solid all-round display.

"It was a good win because it brought an end to our poor run and I'm delighted," said manager John Boyle, who went on to praise the performance of debutant Corby.

"Declan looked a bit out of his depth at first but once he settled he played a blinder and took his goal really well. He showed determination and composure and he almost got a second late on.

"He said after the game that he hadn't expected to be playing. He thought he was in the squad to come along for the experience and would be on the bench. He said if he had known he was playing he wouldn't have got any sleep on Friday so it's possibly a good thing that he didn't.

"Arnold came at us a bit in the first half and had two really good chances. To be fair, they could have come in at half-time in the lead. But I told the lads at the break that they just had to keep doing what they were doing and we would break them down.

"That's exactly what happened and we defended much better in the second half. I don't think Arnold had a clear shot on our goal after the break. We had some good openings and it could have been more, but I'm very satisfied with the effort from my lads." The visitors could have taken the lead as early as the 11th minute. Thackley sweeper Danny Ferrand slipped on the edge of the area, Aiden Brady picked up the loose ball and put a low cross into the centre of the area. Darren Back was just squeezed out by James Riley and keeper Aaron Brian.

The home side settled and enjoyed a good ten-minute spell.

Ian Briggs could have scored from a Corby pass but hit his shot straight at Town keeper Lee Broster from four yards.

Two goals in five minutes handed Thackley all three points after they took the lead just after the hour.

Again Corby was involved. His vision released Simon Hillam, who rounded the keeper and, from the tightest of angles, squeezed a shot into the far corner.

Five minutes later Corby doubled the score with a solo strike. He broke down the right from the halfway line. As he came to the last defender he had two players in support, but dropped his shoulder, raced through and hammered in a low, angled drive.
