The widow of a police traffic officer who was shot and killed while on duty on Boxing Day said she kept expecting him to come home.

Eilisa Broadhurst, from Birkenshaw, Bradford, described how she was facing up to life without her husband, Pc Ian Broadhurst, pictured, shot as he was investigating a suspicious vehicle in Leeds.

Mrs Broadhurst said she kept his police helmet on the TV at their home as a constant reminder. "I keep expecting him to come home," she said. "A week after it happened I dreamt that he had come back. He was sitting on a sofa in the corner of the room and he said 'The police have got it wrong. I'm not dead at all'."

Mrs Broadhurst, 25, said the couple married two years ago and had dreamed of having children. But she had wanted to wait so they could enjoy some time together first.

She said she has hardly left their terraced home since Pc Broadhurst's death, saying she feels a "presence" there.

Mrs Broadhurst has been supported by her parents, Martin and Pat Glen, who came to live with her from their home near Glasgow on Boxing Day and have been by her side ever since.

l A 35-year-old American man, David Bieber, has appeared in court charged with murdering Pc Broadhurst and attempting to murder another two officers.
