Work will start this year on a £4.3 million neighbourhood and medical centre in West Bowling, Bradford.

The complex will be built on the site of the former Woodroyd School in Greenway Road after planning permission was granted by Bradford Council.

The project is largely being funded by Bradford Trident which is running the £50 million ten-year regeneration scheme in the Park Lane, Marshfields and West Bowling areas of Bradford.

"We are delighted that these plans have been passed and think it will be an excellent resource for the area," said a Trident spokesman.

The complex will have three main features. The medical centre will be home to doctors, with some GP practices in the area relocating to the complex as well as providing a wide variety of health services, as well as a chemist shop.

The neighbourhood centre will contain a nursery and a creche, play areas and training and advice rooms, a computer suite and health activities. It will be the children's centre for the area and there will also be space to let for other organisations.

And an atrium-style entrance will feature a caf and exhibition space.

Bradford Trident is contributing £3.3 million of the costs of the project, with £800,000 being provided by SureStart and other grants make up the rest of the money.

The process of inviting tenders for the building work is underway and work should start in summer.

Work is already underway on two other big Bradford Trident projects in the area.

A neighbourhood nursery is being built that will be attached to the Burnett Fields Family Centre in Dorset Street which will boost the number of nursery places in the area. It is also being part funded by SureStart as well as a significant contribution from the Yorkshire Region of the Wooden Spoon Society. It is expected to be completed by late spring this year.

Work has also already started on regenerating the former Mayfield Centre on Broadway Avenue in Marshfields. The £1m scheme is scheduled to be completed in the summer and will be used by the community.

Bradford Trident community director, Greg Lucas, said: "These projects are a fantastic addition to facilities in the area.

"The great thing is that we have managed to bring along so many partners with us and this will ensure the sustainability of these centres for years to come."

Bradford Trident's budget is provided by the Government's New Deal for Communities fund.
