Bradford's education bosses were left red-faced after a printed report outlining plans for schools misspelled the word "Organisation" on its front cover.

The report, titled Schools Organisation Plan, has the word Organisation wrongly spelled as "Organistion" in orange letters.

Councillor John Godward (Lab, Great Horton) was outraged when he was shown a copy of the highly detailed document.

"It was so stark, I couldn't believe it had slipped the attention of people who are supposed to check the proofs," said Coun Godward.

"When it was handed to me I was extremely embarrassed being a member of the council."

Coun Godward contacted Bradford's education director Phil Green. Mr Green replied in an e-mail that the Council had already been told about the mistake. "The entire document was proof-read (as you would expect with something with so much detail in it, especially the figures)," said Mr Green. "We saw a mock-up of the front cover (though minus the photographs) and there was nothing wrong with the spelling at that stage.

"This seems to have happened between the final proof-read version leaving us and arriving back from the printers."

The report has been circulated to all Bradford's 250 head teachers along with other senior officials and people outside the local authority. It is understood that more than 1,000 copies were printed.

Coun Godward told the Telegraph & Argus he was not sure if he accepted the education director's explanation for the error.

Mr Green told the T&A: "Yes, we have to hold our hands up and say we made a mistake.

"Like all organisations, including newspapers, we sometimes suffer from the problem of typing errors and the one on the cover wasn't spotted before the reports were sent out.

"Due to the cost of re-printing we have decided not to do so but if extra copies are printed, the error will be corrected."
