Haworth's reputation in Yorkshire in Bloom has continued to grow.

And following the official announcement of the spring judging results, the Bront village is in a position to rise even more places.

The entry climbed from seventh to fifth place in the small country town section, and scored just seven points less than close rivals Addingham in second place.

Organisers on the Haworth in Bloom committee were delighted with the continued improvements.

Spokesman Mike Hutchinson said: "We have gone up two places and are only one point behind Filey, which was in last year's national finals. So we are very happy and all quite chuffed."

He was also pleased that the judges had pointed out the increasing support from villagers and the pursuit of future plans. Mr Hutchinson added: "It is really, really good and we are very pleased. All we need now is more people to help to take things on."

The judges were full of praise for Haworth's entry, highlighting a range of activities, including the purge on vandalism, the sponsored graveyard clean-up and the character of Haworth Park.

They also praised the involvement of the traders' association and the school gardening club, including ten-year-old Joe Thorpe, who accompanied the judges throughout the tour.

Joe's father, gardener Steve Thorpe, said: "I think the comments sometimes matter more than the plans. But I am really pleased we are only one point behind Filey and three points off third place. That is the target to drive us on towards the summer judging."

The judges will return to Haworth in July to complete their verdict, as well as casting their eye over the special categories. In only its third year in the competition, Haworth is in a strong position to earn some silverware.
