IT has been another successful year for the Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts with entries up particularly in the drama section.

Secretary Elizabeth Holbrook said that there had been four extra drama classes this year when the event changed its name from the Wharfedale Music Festival to the Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts.

And the decision to include professional artist as well as Festival winners at the Gala Concert on the final day last Saturday was also a winner, said Miss Holbrook, and organisers will be repeating the exercise in the future.

"We have had a lot of positive feedback - people thought the concert was wonderful," Miss Holbrook said.

However she said she would have hoped for a larger turnout from the town. She said: "Those who didn't come missed a wonderful concert."

Already the organising committee is starting work on next year's event and for the Festival in 2006 which will be its centenary.

Menston school children are celebrating after winning a whole host of prizes.

The young pupils scooped three first places, two second places and three third places in prose reading sections of the festival.

Forty-two youngsters from Mens-ton Primary School took part in the festival and eight of them were placed in the first three in their categories. Head teacher Simon Camby said the school had supported the festival for a number of years.

He added: "All pupils were outstanding in their efforts and standards achieved. The children gain so much from this experience.

"We are very proud of all our pupils who worked so hard in preparation for their individual performances. In addition, we are extremely grateful for all the adults who have given freely of their time to work with the children over the preceding months."

In the memorised prose section seven-year-olds Jennie Britton and Francesca Harris came second and third, and eight-year-old James Bloor came second.

In prepared prose reading nine-year-olds Prudence Bateson and Stephanie Hunter came first and third, ten-year-old Eloise Hall came first, and 11-year-olds Hannah Hartley and Adam Dinsdale came first and third.
