HUSBAND and wife cyclists Doug and Liz Petty took major honours in the tough Tour of Majorca event recently.

Doug, a former professional cyclist, had been on the Spanish island since January leading international training camps, and his was joined by Liz for the two day event.

They returned to England with a haul of trophies from the event which was part of the Spanish Cycling Championships.

Liz Spencer-Petty, the daughter of former Cougars director Bill Spencer, was crowned top rider in her category on one of the toughest climbs on the island. She was clear winner of trhe women's 40-49 years age group and second int he Over-35 womens section. She also took the Cyclo-Tourist trophy on the climb.

Doug also won his category on the climb on the island where he has become a sporting institution. He has been organising training camps on the island since 1968, was given an award for promoting tourism on the island and even has a race named after him.

This year the 'Grand Prix Doug Petty' was won by local rider David Muntaner who survived terrible weather conditions and averaged 40Km an hour (about 25mph) for the 128k race -- including the climbs. A total of 97 riders from 10 nations took part.
