WHAT a fantastic spring boost for the area to have no fewer than three winners in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom spring judging!

In fact, make that 'four winners', if we count the associated Leeds Schools In Bloom competition, too, in which Guiseley Infants came top.

After the long, dark months of winter the sight of carefully tended and thoughtfully planted gardens, parks and memorials thriving in the sun does everyone the world of good.

The people of Guiseley, Otley and Hawksworth should be grateful to their respective In Bloom groups for the real difference they have made to their environments.

And now, with spring wins under each of their belts, those responsible can work towards scoring a similar success in the summer round of the competition.

Let's all lend a hand in whatever way we can.

GUISELEY schoolchildren should be congratulated for pushing the city council to provide them with green recycling bins.

We hear a lot about the benefits of recycling and how we all should all be more environmentally friendly. Indeed, Leeds City Council, like all other local authorities, is under an obligation to encourage its residents to recycle more and rely less on landfill sites.

So, when a school comes up with the excellent idea of recycling the massive amount of waste paper it uses every day, it seems only sensible that it should be encouraged in every way.

Indeed, it seems so obvious, that one can only wonder why it isn't already done. Hopefully, this is something that has just slipped through the net and the fact that Tranmere Park Primary School has brought it up will mean all schools will shortly be getting delivery of their own recycling bins.
