Bradford's finest livestock will be among thousands of animals competing for prizes at this year's Great Yorkshire Show.

Cattle, horses and ponies from farms across the district including Myrtle Grove Farm, Queensbury, and Hill Top Farm, Denholme, are to take part in the highly-acclaimed agricultural event.

Denholme farmer Steven Priestley, of Hill Top Farm, is set to take four pedigree Limousin cattle to the show.

He said: "We enjoy going to the show and we get a lot of business out of it. It is a good shop window for selling our cattle and it is always a nice social event."

Top Yorkshire showjumpers are to demonstrate their skills at the event, from July 13 to 15, to compete for the Park Cock o' The North Championship while donkey driving and ladies side-saddling will be displayed in the White Rose Ring.

The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery will entertain in the main ring with their daredevil riding techniques.

In the country pursuits section there will be falconry displays and terrier, beagle and foxhound demonstrations including one by shepherdess Katy Cropper, of BBC's One Man and his Dog.

Away from the animals, continental cheeses, yoghurts and ice-cream will be judged in the Great Yorkshire Cheese and Dairy show, sponsored by Bradford-based supermarket chain Morrisons.

Produce from across the region will go on sale in the show's food hall.

Pupils from primary school across the region will benefit from the educational area featuring an interactive display by Halifax museum Eureka.

A fashion show featuring the creations of Leeds University students and a flower show will be included in the three-day event at the Harrogate showground.

Christopher Hall, honorary show director, said: "We're looking forward to an excellent three days.

"The entries for the competitive classes have been flooding in and there's a hive of activity at the showground getting everything ready.

"As well as being a shop window for farming and the countryside it is a fantastic day out."

The event, in its 146th year, last year attracted more than 120,000 visitors.
