Athletes in Bradford have been tipped to bring back a horde of medals from the Special Olympics.

A 31-strong squad from across the district are going for gold in the National Special Olympic Games in Glasgow in July next year.

And because of their successful track record, organisers at Bradford Sport and Recreation Association for People with Disabilities (BSRAPD) are confident of the team's success.

Last year a five-strong team won 16 medals in the Special Olympics in Dublin.

"They have a fantastic track record and we know they will do extremely well," said BSRAPD sports development officer Robert Cooper.

And the Olympians have a lot to achieve before they even get to the games.

Mr Cooper said preparation included hours of training and taking part in regional and national events.

"It's not something they are going into lightly and they all have a very professional approach," he said.

"We will have the biggest group going from this region and it's our job to make sure they are doing their training and giving them all the encouragement and support they need."

Among those taking part will be runner Jason Hunt, 31, and power-lifter Nigel Halliday, 38, both of Shipley.

A £20,000 appeal to help the athletes realise their dreams has been set up to pay for entry and training costs.

And organisers are calling on the generosity of people in the district to support the squad.

Their quest already has the backing of a number of sponsors including Bradford-based health care cash plan company Sovereign Health Care, in Manningham Lane, restaurateur Omar Khan, PRS printers in Dick Lane, HSBC bank and Bradford Council.

Sovereign Health Care sales manager Paul Kitching said the company had supported the group for about eight years.

"They always come back with plenty of medals and it's important that they receive the support they deserve," he said.

The games run from July 1 to July 9 and include a number of heats. The Bradford team will be competing in swimming, carpet bowls, ten-pin bowling, athletics and power-lifting.

A fundraising fun day and barbecue will be held at the Woodville Training Centre, in Woodville Road, Keighley, on Saturday, August 7, 12.30pm to 5.30pm.

Donations are also being sought for a raffle which will be held at the event.
