TREVOR and Richard Hargreaves enlisted the help of Yorkshire Champion Stephen Pickles to win the Valley Trebles competition.

The local 'dream team' from the Cross Roads club dominated the final on a rain-swept green at Denholme to win 23-9 as they swept to victory over the Craven 'triangle' of Viv Ambrose, Tony Finn and Mick Bostow.

Ambrose and Bastow had gained some consolation in the Waterloo Bowling Club pairs at Huddersfield, but lost in the final to a Sheffield pairing.

The veteran Inter-District team lost narrowly to Bradford in the latest match of the series. They had three winners at Settle and won the aggregate thanks chiefly to Colin Wortley. The away squad also recorded three wins at Horton Park where Peter Deighton was pick of the pack, but they lost overall. The team's next match is against Halifax on July 16.

The Valley No1 team plays its last match of the Yorkshire Over 60's league today at Halifax Bowling Club when they play Hebden Bridge at 1.30. The No2 team is in action on July 23 at 10.30am.

The Craven Classic finals are tonight (Friday) at 7pm featuring some of the top names in bowling, including Lee Lawton, Chris Mordue and C I Wilson. Local hopes rest with Andy Uttley. A Large crowd is expected at the Craven Green next to Skipton's main car park for all the action.

The final preliminary rounds of the John Rycroft Trophy are on Sunday, with the finals taking place on August 8.

The Valley Veterans Knockout event has reached the final stages. The Burgess Cup final, after two one-sided semi-finals, will be between Haworth A and Cross Hills A. The John Holmes Final, which had close semi-finals, will be between Craven and Silsden Bowling Club. The dates are to be arranged, contact Bob Jowett (01535-217646).

Qualifiers for the Skipton Sunday Handicap at Colne CC on July 18, include the usual familiar faces in Les Foster and Trevor Hargreaves together with the not-so-familiar-face of David 'Action Man' Hewitt. Others are Jenny Greenbank, Walter 'The Noisy Assassin' Turner and Mary Hemsley whose bowling action proved too much for the popular Yorkshire champion.

The Popular Oxenhope duo of David and Mary Hemsley reached the final of the Halifax Mixed Pairs only to lose 10-15 to Betty Brown and ex-Yorkshire Champion Brian Holroyd who had the advantage of playing on his home green at Hillcrest.
