The posters going up around Bradford unflinchingly portray the shocking image of a child being thrown through a car windscreen.

Unpleasant they may be, but sometimes drastic measures are needed to hammer home an important message.

No-one is more aware of this than Parveen Kauser. Police stopped Parveen near her home when they spotted her five-year-old daughter unrestrained in the back of the car.

The £30 fine that Parveen received could have made her bitter. But it didn't. It made her think. And now she is at the vanguard of a local campaign aimed at making sure parents use seatbelts and harnesses for their children.

Across Bradford last year more than 2,300 people were injured in road accidents, and 186 of those were under 15.

The message is simple and the same one it has been for years: wearing a seatbelt can save your life.

Belting up isn't about avoiding a fine - although last year when police ran a similar campaign they handed out 40 penalty tickets in Bradford during the first two hours of the crackdown.

Rather it is about being as safe as possible on the roads. And with the ever-increasing number of cars, which bring with them the risk of more and more accidents, it is our children's safety which is paramount.

Small children are too young to look after their own safety needs and we as adults have a responsibility to not only ensure they are as secure as they can be, but also to instil in them the ethos of safe driving for when they are old enough to get behind the wheel of a car.
