Yorkshire took only 100 minutes this morning to crash to a ten-wicket defeat in less than two-and-a-half days in the championship game against Somerset at Scarborough.

Resuming on 63 for three, still 92 runs in arrears, Yorkshire crashed to 160 all out with paceman Nixon McLean and spinner Keith Dutch each bagging five wickets and it then took Somerset only four balls to pick up the six runs they needed for a maximum 22 points.

The only consolation for Yorkshire was that acting captain Matthew Wood made an unbeaten 66 to become the first Yorkshire batsman since Geoff Boycott in 1985 to carry his bat.

Yorkshire were in urgent need of a big stand between the not out pair of Wood and Ian Harvey if they were to dig their way out of a deep hole.

But in the second over of the morning, McLean brought one back sharply to trim Harvey's bails and give the West Indian his third wicket of the innings and his ninth of the match.

Darren Lehmann, coming in at 73 for four, decided attack was the best form of defence, and he tore into Simon Francis, smashing him for 32 from the first nine balls.

Francis was withdrawn from the firing line and replaced by off-spinner Keith Dutch who ended Lehmann's spree with his second delivery which the left-hander mis-hit high to mid-on where Simon Francis gained a measure of revenge for his pasting by coolly taking the catch.

Yorkshire's sorry effort became even more acute as Ismail Dawood celebrated his 28th birthday by being bowled by Dutch for only a single and two balls later Richard Dawson was snapped up at short leg off bat and pad.

Dutch had taken three wickets in 11 balls for two runs and his figures at the end of the over read 6-2-5-4.

Next to go was Chris Silverwood, who flashed at McLean and was caught behind and at 131 for eight Yorkshire were head for an innings defeat. Wood was still there, however, with 45 but only Mark Lawson and Steve Kirby remained to keep him company.

Lawson did not last long, being caught behind to give McLean another wicket and last man Kirby came in at 135 for nine. A six to Wood wiped out the arrears before Kirby was lbw to a full toss from McLean.
