Fans must stump up for City's sake

SIR - As a Bradford City fan, I was not very happy about the views of some 25-year season ticket holders who have to find an additional £150 for next season's matches.

Do these fans want the club to go bust? The administrators have no choice but to do this. It's not their fault the club is in this mess.

Julian Rhodes has done his best to save the club and has put millions into it to keep it alive.

These fans need to look at the bigger picture. When and if the club gets through this, every fan will see a better club in the long run.

I would pay the extra money if I was a 25-year season ticket holder. Sacrifices have to be made.

Save our heritage

SIR - Re the article 'Landmark iconic building for Odeon site' (T&A, July 14), the photograph of the rear of the Odeon on Quebec Street is very misleading. Half of the picture depicts the skeletal remains of buildings which have nothing to do with the Odeon.

The red-brick Odeon building looks in remarkably good condition given the way it has been neglected. Was this misrepresentation and the picture of the weed-clad dome intended to convince us this is a lost cause?

We have to live with the appalling effects of past decision-makers, but thankfully professional opinions vary. Perhaps a Bradfordian with an allegiance to its heritage should be involved.

Why would the Odeon "cost too much to renovate" compared to rebuilding? Why would the building only have a "30-year life span" after renovation? Will that apply to other restored buildings throughout Bradford? Are we to lose these also? It hardly seems likely.

We already have an "iconic" landmark building in keeping with the Alhambra which complements and reflects the design. Hands off our heritage.

My big chance

SIR - Re 'A week of talent', your reader Dave Brundle (T&A, July 16) was right. I too was on Carroll Levis' Discovery Show and got through to the final on the Saturday night. I was age 15.

I vaguely remember the outright winner was a little girl of about seven who had a great voice.

I attended Madge and Jaque Bentley's Dance School, also appearing every Monday night at the Gaumont Ballroom where we did a cabaret with the well-known Arnold Loxam our accompanist.

We had some good times. I wonder if some of your readers remember those nights? It will be sad to see the Gaumont as I knew it disappear.

Fuel for the BNP

SIR - So, high-ranking Muslims are upset that the police are using legitimate anti-terrorism laws to search people of their faith. What do they expect when the biggest danger of terrorism to this country comes from Islamic terrorists?

In fact followers of Bin Laden have actually boasted about striking in this country! Should we just ignore this fact because of the sensitivities of British Muslims?

I seem to remember that when the IRA were the number one threat to this country there was a trend of stopping Irishmen.

If a new terrorism threat came from white middle-aged Yorkies who sometimes wear a cloth cap I'd expect to be stopped going about my business in Idle or Bradford city centre. I'd actually breathe a sigh of relief that the security forces were taking our security seriously.

Indeed, I'm certain that mainstream peace-loving Muslims are of the same persuasion. But, the hue and cry from the high-profile ones will inevitably create resentment among even the most passive members of the indigenous population.

It's issues like this that fuels the BNP's cause.

Firework plea

Sir - Re fireworks (T&A July 17), OK, let's stop and pause for thought - does anyone realise why these fireworks are let off, and we are not in November?

The words celebration, birthday, anniversary or indeed wedding spring to mind. What is it that makes it annoying? Is it the time that these are let off? I mean I heard some at 1.30 in the morning!

Surely it should be dark before they are let off, otherwise why bother? You can't see the delights in the air in the afternoon!

So come on, let's have a reasonable time for lighting fireworks and enjoying the celebration.
