Liversedge looked on course for a much-needed win in their battle to avoid relegation, when they bowled out Carlton for just 90 in their Premier Division clash until Simon Sterling stepped in to wreck their hopes.

Tausef Ibrar did the damage with the ball for Liversedge with a four for 15 return and Joss Tingle weighed in with three for 17.

Their own innings began well enough as Mark Hydes (32) and Alan Bentley (24) added 47 for the first wicket.

However, New Zealand-born Sterling picked up three wickets in his first over to start the rot, and Liversedge never recovered.

He bowled eight overs in all, six of them maidens, and though being denied an all-ten feat by Kevin Watson (1-25), who collected the eighth wicket to fall, Sterling finished with the league's best ever nine-wicket figures after conceding just two runs.

The defeat put Liversedge right back in relegation trouble and they are now only six points clear of bottom club Northowram Fields and just one ahead of Carlton and Wrenthorpe in joint second-from-bottom spot.

Mirfield Parish Cavaliers were beaten at Wakefield St Michaels, despite an innings of 89 from Eric Austin, which took him to 923 runs for the season, and they are now only two points clear of the drop zone.

Townville still lead Methley by three points in the title race after beating Ossett and Wrenthorpe respectively, while reigning champions Wrenthorpe had no respite from a desperately disappointing season when they lost by six wickets in Sunday's Jack Hampshire Trophy final against Ossett at Methley.

In the First Division, Scholes' two-wicket win at Roundhay kept them nine points clear at the top with Moorlands moving into second place by virtue of their five-wicket win over second-from-bottom Staincliffe.
