Haworth Road went down to a comprehensive defeat to Pendle Forest in the Cowling Cup final at Glusburn, paying the price for dropping more than ten catches.

The Shipley side were without their two main strike bowlers, Adam Cook and Graham Jones - one on holiday, one at his daughter's wedding - but even with those two it would have taken some quality bowling to take the fizz out of Pendle Forest's champagne start.

Peter Archer and Rob Buchanan put on 89 for the first wicket with the former scoring 37.

After 20 overs, the score had scorched to 112 for one, and it wasn't until the score was at 207 that they lost their second wicket, Buchanan falling for 77.

Nine runs later, man of the match Simon Reed fell for a superb 80, caught in the deep by John Driver. The runs continued to flow, however, as Pendle reached a massive 271 for five after their 45 overs.

Richard Gill and Matt Lonsdale finished with two wickets each for a shell-shocked Haworth.

Just when a good start was required, the in-form Richard Butterfield got the only delivery which kept low and was dismissed in the first over.

In the face of excellent bowling from Andrew Hakin (4-43) and Edward Snowden (3-54), Haworth were always on the back foot.

Wickets fell at regular intervals and it looked as if the innings was going to struggle to reach three figures before Martin Smith battled his way to a brave 64.

He was eventually dismissed by veteran Pete Jones on 132 and five runs later a fine catch from Hakin ended Haworth's resistence.
