THE River Wharfe burst its banks at Wharfemeadows Park after six weeks worth of rain fell on Otley in just 24 hours this week.

Between 50 and 75mm of rainwater fell on Monday and Tuesday.

The contstant rain sent the river level soaring and the surging water carried trees and other debris down stream.

One tree became lodged on the weir in Otley adjacent to Gar-netts mill.

There was anger in Otley that residents didn't receive a proper warning about the threat of flooding.

But at Castley Lane there was a much happier picture with the new flood barrier standing up to its first serious test.
