SPEEDING motorists in Aireborough and Horsforth now risk being caught by another batch of speed cameras.

West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership (CRP) has announced where and when its latest roadside speed control safety cameras will 'go live'. And the A65, from Guiseley through Yeadon, Rawdon and Horsforth to Leeds, has this week had another ten cameras turned on.

Angry drivers have already protested about what they claim is an 'overkill' of anti-speeding measures along the route, but it seems their wrath was being vented at 'dummy' machines which have actually been sitting idle for months.

The CRP says the locations for all of its new cameras have been decided using strict, Government stipulated criteria - and claims they are essential to cut accident rates on this stretch of the A65, which is used by 400,000 vehicles a day.

Responding to criticisms from some motorists, the organisation also points out that only proven 'black spots' get speed cameras. These are routes where there have been:

l At least four fatalities and serious injuries per km in the last three years

l At least eight personal injury collisions (serious and slight injuries) per km in the last three years

l Speeding has been shown to have been a contributory factor in some or all collisions - collision sites that are not speed related are de-selected

l At least 20 per cent of drivers are exceeding the speed limit

l Excess driving speed must be at least ten per cent above the speed limit, plus two mph (eg 35mph in a 30mph zone) for free-flowing traffic, excluding rush hours.

Philip Gwynne, Head of Public Affairs for West Yorkshire CRP, said: "The camera warning signs and camera housings - the bright yellow boxes at the side of the road - have been up for some time at these locations, so motorists have had plenty of advance notice that the cameras are coming.

"This is a dangerous stretch of road where innocent people have been killed or seriously hurt.

"We hope that this knowledge - and the knowledge that the cameras are now "live" and monitoring vehicle speeds - will encourage motorists to check that they're keeping within the speed limit and take that little bit of extra care that can make the difference between safety and tragedy."

Drivers who choose to flaunt the legal speed limits on the road now face receiving a minimum of three penalty points on their licence and a £60 fine - higher fines and more points will apply to anyone exceeding the limit by 25mph or more.
