Guiseley brothers Richard and Michael Truswell have both been selected to represent Yorkshire at cricket.

The pair play their club cricket with Menston CC and despite their tender years both have already made it into the senior teams.

Both boys played for Menston's second team last Saturday.

Two tight finishes may have denied Yorkshire's Under 12 cricketers major honours in the season's top tournament but the dark cloud had a silver lining for Michael, 12.

He won two Man-of-the-Match awards before receiving the All- Rounder-of-the-Competition prize on the final day of the prestigious eight-county tournament held at Ampleforth College, North Yorkshire.

Michael received a cricket bag and £75 worth of equipment vouchers from Gray Nicholls.

The Guiseley School pupil helped Yorkshire Under-12s to two victories before they suffered a last-ball defeat by three runs against Essex, the eventual tournament winners.

They then lost the third/fourth play-off game by one wicket with one ball remaining.

Awards for the 100 young cricketers taking part were presented by former Yorkshire and England left-arm spinner Don Wilson.

The award to Michael was based on two crucial innings, nine wickets, and some excellent fielding, including a stunning one-handed gully catch.

"Ampleforth was really good," said Michael.

"My team mates are great to play with and we have really good coaches and getting a prize at the end of it was a total surprise. I only wish I'd done better against Essex and that we could have got through to the final.

"My bowling had been a bit dodgy because of lack of match practice, so I was pleased that went OK in the matches."

The young Tyke played his first competitive game for Menston Under-13s at the age of six and has been a regular in the team since he was eight.

He got into the Yorkshire Under-11s last year as an opening batsman. Batting in the top four this year, he is one of the Yorkshire team's top scorers and has chipped in with 11 wickets in five matches with his off spin.

Earlier this season he scored 102 not out for Leeds Schools v Bradford.

Michael is also an international badminton player, having recently represented England in tournaments in Belgium and Germany, where he lost narrowly to the competition's ultimate winner.

His elder brother, Richard, 14, also a Guiseley School pupil, will be representing Yorkshire Under-14 B Team at Ampleforth College next week.
